Planning estimates, not binding quotations. PV and battery ranges come from the supplied October 2026 open dataset. The 6 kWp PV range is interpolated between its 5 and 8 kWp tiers, then adds the 5 kWh battery range. EUR/kWp includes battery cost where listed. Yield assumes an unshaded suitable roof at 1,580 / 1,750 / 1,410 kWh per kWp per year. Lisbon/Cascais payback uses 23% IVA, 70% self-use at EUR 0.24/kWh and 30% export at EUR 0.02/kWh; no grants, financing, degradation or maintenance. Actual battery use and shading change the result.

6% IVA: check the legal basis, not the sales pitch

CIVA Lista I Verba 2.37 formerly covered qualifying renewable-energy equipment at the reduced mainland rate. Its temporary application ended on 30 June 2025. Do not assume an ordinary standalone installation qualifies for 6% IVA in 2026, or that residential use, a battery or a system below 1 MW automatically makes it eligible.

Budget for 23% mainland IVA unless your adviser confirms a current qualifying reduced-rate works provision and its conditions. Ask for the precise CIVA entry on the written quotation and separate equipment, installation, roof works and storage. The calculator offers a 6% scenario, not a tax eligibility decision.

DGEG installer credentials and E-Redes grid checks

Verify the electrical installer or technician registration with DGEG, liability insurance, equipment compliance and who will submit the UPAC paperwork. Request roof structural checks, earthing, protection design, inverter compatibility, warranties and a commissioning report.

UPAC up to and including 700 W is exempt from prior control only when there is no injection into the public grid. Above 700 W and up to 30 kW requires Mera Comunicacao Previa (MCP) through DGEG. Above 30 kW and up to 1 MW requires prior registration and an operating certificate; larger systems require licensing. E-Redes handles grid and metering requirements, not the DGEG prior-control decision. Agree export arrangements and meter checks before commissioning.

Pitfalls for expat homeowners

Reject quotes that omit VAT, mounting details, scaffolding, roof repairs, registration or the battery usable capacity. Coastal roofs need an appropriate corrosion specification; shaded Sintra sites need a site-specific yield model.

Do not pay the full balance before the agreed commissioning documents and test results. Check condominium roof rights and planning restrictions before installation. Obtain an English scope, staged payment schedule and warranty contact arrangements.

Buyer questions

How much does a 5 kWp solar system cost in Portugal in 2026?

The supplied planning range is EUR 5,400 - EUR 7,200 before IVA, without a battery. At 23% mainland IVA this is EUR 6,642 - EUR 8,856; roof works and grid changes may be extra.

Is 6% IVA automatic for residential solar in 2026?

No. The temporary Verba 2.37 measure ended on 30 June 2025. Require a current qualifying legal basis confirmed by your adviser rather than assuming residential use is sufficient.

How much does a 5 kWh LFP battery add?

The supplied installed planning range is EUR 2,100 - EUR 2,900 before IVA. Confirm usable capacity, backup capability and inverter compatibility.

What annual solar yield should I budget for?

Illustrative unshaded-roof assumptions are 1,580 kWh/kWp in Lisbon/Cascais, 1,750 in the Algarve and 1,410 in Porto. Orientation, shading and losses must be modelled for your roof.

Does my home system require UPAC registration?

A 3-10 kWp residential system requires DGEG prior communication. The exemption at up to 700 W applies only without injection into the grid.

How many years is solar payback?

The table shows simple Lisbon/Cascais planning payback using disclosed tariff and self-use assumptions. Request a site-specific cash-flow estimate; battery replacement and financing can extend the period.
